STARTLAND FARM
The art of giving back and restarting.
In 2020, I bought an 11-hectare parcel of land that was previously a cornfield. I’ve withdrawn it from cultivation and rewilded it. This farm is now a private reserve. My goal, in the language of ecology, is to achieve the highest diversity and density on the land in the shortest possible time.
In simple terms:
• As many native species as possible (diversity)
• and as many specimens as possible (density).
The four principles of the farm:
• It is not enough to protect what is left of nature, but we have to give back areas! As intensively as we have destroyed it, at least as intensively we must also help life to return.
• The networking of many Startlands is a real help to the biosphere.
• After we have colonised the biosphere, it is time for a „new deal”. We need to forge a new alliance with the 35-40 million species that live with us.
• The survival of the biosphere is the basis of human existence. That is, restoring the biosphere comes before all other issues.
The three pillars of rewilding:
1. Research (as the basis for decisions)
2. Strengthening favourable features.
3. Creating missing characteristics.
A Stratland can be:
– A piece of land that we already own.
– Or a newly purchased land.
By 2024, I’ve found or reintroduced more than 800 species of plants and animals on my estate. This number could realistically reach two thousand by 2030.

Any small area can be a Startland, even a balcony. Ecological value does not matter, so it can be also a concrete slab. What matters: whatever the size of the area, to significantly increase its liveability in a short time.
