Hungarian TSO calls for voluntary cuts from large energy consumers
Hungarian electricity transmission system operator MAVIR, acting on orders from the government, will ask several dozen large industrial electricity consumers to voluntarily reduce their electricity consumption.
The operator will contact cement factories, car and battery manufacturers and chemical plants to reduce their electricity consumption during the critical hours from 17:00 to 22:00. The government is also preparing legislation that would allow it to intervene on a mandatory basis if necessary, including through the scheduled temporary shutdown of some large consumers.
On a normal summer day in the mentioned evening period, electricity demand averages 6000 MW, but MAVIR estimates that the peak could now be some 20 per cent higher. Growing demand coincides with a 2,400 MW drop in the country’s output. The Paks nuclear power plant will be shut down completely as water levels on the Danube, used to cool the NPP, fall, and the gas-fired Dunamenti Power Plant is malfunctioning.
