She is joined by award-winning poet, writer and educator\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thebookerprizes.com\/the-booker-library\/judges\/raymond-antrobus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Raymond Antrobus<\/u><\/a>; musician, writer and broadcaster\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thebookerprizes.com\/the-booker-library\/judges\/jarvis-cocker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Jarvis Cocker<\/u><\/a>; journalist, editor and critic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thebookerprizes.com\/the-booker-library\/judges\/rebecca-liu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Rebecca Liu<\/u><\/a>; and Booker Prize-shortlisted novelist, poet and essayist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thebookerprizes.com\/the-booker-library\/authors\/patricia-lockwood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><u>Patricia Lockwood<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year&#8217;s selection was chosen from 163 submissions and celebrates works of long-form fiction by writers of any nationality, written in English and published in the UK and\/or Ireland between 1 October 2025 and 30 September 2026. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The longlist transports readers <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">from a hospital in Mexico City to the Kent seaside in a post-apocalyptic Britain to an assisted suicide clinic in Zurich, from the barren hillsides of the Outer Hebrides to the criminal badlands of West Dublin, from Kingston, Jamaica in the late 1980s to coastal Massachusetts in the run-up to the 2024 US election, from an unnamed medieval court to a prison cell that defies explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tonally diverse, the books abound with humour and heartbreak, satire and surreality. There are fresh takes on dystopian sci-fi, royal history, the crime thriller and the campus novel. Great books are not cosy. In their various ways, the novels we have chosen are (we hope) dynamite.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shortlist will be announced at a public event at the Southbank Centre in London on 22 September. The six shortlisted authors will each receive 2,500 fonts and a specially bound edition of their book. The announcement of the winning\u00a0book\u00a0will take place on 9 November at Old Billingsgate in London. The winner receives 50,000 fonts and a trophy named Iris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Facts and figures: the longlist in numbers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The longlist features authors representing seven countries: Jamaica, Mexico, Turkey, England, Scotland, Ireland and the United States. Chloe Aridjis, who is Mexican-British, would be the first author of Mexican heritage to win the prize. Kenan Orhan, who is Turkish-American, would be the first writer of Turkish heritage to win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The longest book on the list is Marlon James\u2019s&nbsp;<em>The Disappearers<\/em>, weighing in at over 600 pages, while the shortest is&nbsp;<em>Helen of Nowhere<\/em>&nbsp;by Makenna Goodman \u2013 which is just over 140 pages, and one of six books on this year\u2019s list that are under 250 pages long. The shortest winning novel in the history of the prize was&nbsp;<em>Offshore&nbsp;<\/em>by Penelope Fitzgerald, at 132 pages, in 1979; the longest was&nbsp;<em>The Luminaries<\/em>&nbsp;by Eleanor Catton, in 2013, at 832 pages.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The list features two previous winners \u2013 Scottish-American writer Douglas Stuart, who won with&nbsp;<em>Shuggie Bain<\/em>&nbsp;in 2020, and Jamaican author Marlon James, who won with&nbsp;<em>A Brief History of Seven Killings<\/em>&nbsp;in 2015. Only four authors have won the Booker Prize twice: J.M. Coetzee (1983 and 1999), Peter Carey (1988 and 2001), Hilary Mantel (2009 and 2012) and Margaret Atwood (2000 and 2019). Elizabeth Strout is the only other author on the list who has been nominated previously. She was shortlisted in 2022 for&nbsp;<em>Oh William!&nbsp;<\/em>and longlisted in 2016 for&nbsp;<em>My Name is Lucy Barton<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One previous Booker Prize judge appears on the list: English writer M. John Harrison judged the prize in 2022. Should he win, he would be the prize\u2019s oldest-ever winner, at the age of 81. That title is currently held by Margaret Atwood, who was 79 when she jointly won the prize in 2019. The youngest writer on this year\u2019s list, at 28, is Djamel White.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The list includes three independent publishers\/imprints \u2013 Fitzcarraldo Editions, Serpent\u2019s Tail and Granta. Five books published by Penguin Random House imprints are nominated, including two apiece published by Chatto &amp; Windus and Hamish Hamilton, plus one from Viking. Our judges were \u2018charmed by the novel\u2019s meditation on friendship and grief, and its suggestion that the most meaningful truths can be found in the shadows\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Emma Cline\u2019s darkly humorous and profoundly moving&nbsp;<em>Switzy<\/em>, a private plane transports David, a retired executive, across Europe en route to his final destination: an assisted suicide clinic in Zurich.&nbsp;<em>Switzy&nbsp;<\/em>explores what\u2019s left of a person when their life\u2019s achievements, relationships, contradictions and compromises are stripped away. Our judges&nbsp;called it \u2018a story that feels immersive, elegiac, and very real\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brief, poetic, and sometimes surreal, <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Makenna Goodman\u2019s\u00a0<em>Helen of Nowhere<\/em>\u00a0finds a disgraced university professor, known only as \u2018Man\u2019, seeking a new life in the countryside following the collapse of his marriage and career. In the\u00a0<em>Guardian<\/em>, Jo Hamya called it \u2018a perfect fairytale for our times\u2019, while in the\u00a0<em>New York Review of Books<\/em>, Joanna Biggs said it \u2018offers up, exhilaratingly and naughtily, a myth for the man who needs to be shuffled offstage one way or another\u2019. Our judges called it \u2018philosophically, politically, and spiritually adventurous\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">M. John Harrison\u2019s bleakly satirical and dystopian&nbsp;<em>The End of Everything<\/em>, his first novel in six years, follows Phillip Tennant, a scavenger eking out an existence with his aunt on the Kent coast, against a backdrop of societal collapse and a mysterious alien invasion. In the&nbsp;<em>Financial Times<\/em>, Catherine Taylor called it a \u2018casually horrifying\u2019 and \u2018unexpectedly compassionate\u2019 book. Our judges described it as \u2018shimmering\u2019 and \u2018oblique\u2019,and as \u2018a book not just about everything, but about now\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In&nbsp;<em>The Disappearers<\/em>, Marlon James returns to the late 20th century Jamaica that provided the backdrop to his Booker-winning&nbsp;<em>A Brief History of Seven Killings<\/em>&nbsp;to explore the murder of gay man \u2013 an actor rehearsing for a play \u2013 and its tragic consequences. Our judges said the book \u2018examines territory Caribbean literature has rarely dared to occupy\u2019, and is \u2018written with the full complexity and love of someone who knows the place and its contradictions from the inside\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inspired by a true story and not to be confused with the 2025 spy movie,&nbsp;<em>Black Bag&nbsp;<\/em>by Luke Kennard finds a struggling actor accepting a role as part of a psychological university experiment: spend a term attending lectures zipped inside a large black bag to see how the other students react. A twisted campus satire and a love story of sorts, the book was admired by our judges for \u2018its sharply crafted sentences, memorable sex scenes, and humour\u2019. They added: \u2018There\u2019ll be a lot of discussion about what the novel has to say about the state of modern masculinity (fractious; confused)\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kenan Orhan\u2019s debut novel&nbsp;<em>The Renovation<\/em>&nbsp;\u2013 which began life as a short story in the&nbsp;<em>Atlantic&nbsp;<\/em>\u2013 is built on a bizarre premise. When Dilara hires builders to install a new bathroom after her elderly father moves in with her, she finds that the workmen have instead created what appears to be a Turkish jail cell. Not a replica, but a magical portal to a fully functioning prison. Our judges said they were drawn to its \u2018humour with a decidedly unsettling side\u2019. They added: \u2018It poses questions about political activism, about where you really belong, and about the different forms that \u201cimprisonment\u201d can take (from dementia to exile).\u2019&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rebecca Perry\u2019s debut novel\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>May We Feed the King<\/em>\u00a0sets the tribulations of a reluctant monarch in an unnamed medieval court against the work of an unnamed modern-day curator dressing public displays in an historic palace. In the\u00a0<em>Guardian<\/em>, Melissa Harrison called it \u2018a highly wrought puzzle-box of a book which deliberately wrongfoots the reader at every turn\u2019, while our judges described it as \u2018a wonderfully enticing and eye-opening combination of themes, woven together with an extraordinary delicacy of touch\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gwendoline Riley\u2019s keenly observed&nbsp;<em>The Palm House<\/em>&nbsp;follows two old friends, Laura and Edmund, whose social lives revolve around long evenings in a Southwark pub, setting the world to rights and navigating grief. Our judges called it \u2018minimalist, precise, and indelible\u2019,&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;with \u2018some of the best dialogue this side of Henry Green\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elizabeth Strout\u2019s&nbsp;<em>The Things We Never Say&nbsp;<\/em>introduces us to Artie Dam, an ordinary Massachusetts&nbsp;teacher with an apparently comfortable life \u2013&nbsp;yet who is quietly gripped with feelings of isolation and despair. In the&nbsp;<em>FT<\/em>, Diana Evans called it a \u2018profound, resplendent novel that stares our present moment in the face while throwing a lifeboat to cling to in the storm\u2019. Our judges said it was \u2018brilliantly understated and all the more powerful for that\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Douglas Stuart\u2019s<em>&nbsp;John of John<\/em>&nbsp;follows the eponymous John-Calum MacLeod, a young art graduate, who returns reluctantly to his windswept, repressive and deeply religious home on the Isle of Harris to resume \u2013 and confront \u2013 his old life. Our judges said, \u2018This excavation of family, violence and shame is woven through with beautiful imagistic detail.\u2019&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Djamel White\u2019s savage and tender&nbsp;<em>All Them Dogs&nbsp;<\/em>plunges readers deep into West Dublin\u2019s gangland, where murderous associates Tony Ward and \u2018Flute\u2019 Walsh find their criminal endeavours complicated by feelings of mutual attraction. Our judges praised the book\u2019s \u2018subtle, textured humanity\u2019 hidden beneath its brutal, hyper-masculine exterior.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last but not least, Missouri Williams\u2019 gothic, otherworldly&nbsp;<em>The Vivisectors<\/em>, set in a verdant and crumbling university town, introduces fraudulent professors, militant gardeners, abusive mothers and cancel-culture conflicts.
