Trump administration ends protections for endangered wildlife habitat<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Trump administration finalised a rule<\/a> removing nearly all habitat protections for endangered species, the US nonprofit conservation organisation Centre for Biological Diversity wrote. It added that his decision will leave imperilled species at even greater risk of going extinct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Endangered Species Act prohibits \u201ctake\u201d of endangered species. This is a legal term covering actions such as harassing, capturing or killing them, including actions that harm them. For decades, the US Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service have, by regulation, defined harm to include \u201csignificant habitat modification or degradation.\u201d According to the organisation, the Trump administration\u2019s rescission<\/a> of this harm definition is a cynical attempt to open species\u2019 habitats to logging, mining, oil and gas drilling and other destruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHabitat destruction is the number one threat to endangered species and Trump\u2019s decision to toss out the definition of harm is a death knell for America\u2019s wildlife,\u201d said Tara Zuardo, a senior campaigner at the Center for Biological Diversity. \u201cIf animals don\u2019t have a place to live, they can\u2019t live. Spotted owls, Atlantic salmon, Florida panthers and thousands of other species need protections for the wild places where they make their homes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The prohibition on habitat destruction has been pivotal to protecting and recovering endangered species and was upheld by the Supreme Court in a case that focused on the protection of old-growth forests for spotted owls. In ignoring this precedent, the Trump administration is opening the door for industries of all kinds to destroy the natural world and drive wildlife to extinction in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no question that destroying the places endangered species call home will harm them,\u201d said Zuardo. \u201cScientists from around the world are warning we\u2019re in an extinction crisis with dire consequences for wildlife, us and our children. This decision makes as little sense as a kid who covers their eyes and claims you can\u2019t see them. Pretending this crisis doesn\u2019t exist won\u2019t make it go away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
